In our Balkanlar Road Trip trip with our own vehicle in the summer of 2017, we entered Macedonia Ohrid with a terrible rain after making Thassos – Kavala – Thessaloniki in Greece.. Also, shouldn’t Google Maps take us through the national park for a short cut? Anyway, we went back and forth for half an hour, but we reached Ohrid in the evening.
As soon as we arrived in Ohrid, we dropped ourselves to our hotel called Villa Veron, where we paid 25 Euros per night for accommodation. and we threw ourselves to the restaurant Belvedere on the shore of Lake Ohrid with the dream of eating a nice Kapakci. As you know, when you think of Balkan cuisine, the first thing that comes to mind is cevapci.
The the feeling of being a king in a cheap country’ that we experienced when we came to Skopje in Macedonia before, is for this city. When the taste of my favorite Macedonian wine Tikves Alexandria is added to the happiness of living in Turkey, don’t say it to my pleasure.. By the way, keep in mind the Macedonian Dinar is the national currency of this country, but you can also use Euro in most places.
Ohrid is a place where you can have a quiet and peaceful weekend by flying 1.5 hours from Istanbul.. And visa free! If you reach Skopje Alexander the Great Airport by plane, you can rent a car for 25-30 Euros at the airport exit and reach Ohrid in 3 hours.. But let me tell you from the beginning, you will have to go through some winding roads to reach Ohrid.. Sure it will be worth it. Because for me Ohrid is big Skopje. Although Skopje is the capital, it is a city whose texture has been spoiled with its artificial sculptures.. Only Matka Canyon is an amazing place. If you are going to add Skopje and Matka to your trip, it will be enough to spend half a day in the center of Skopje and half a day in Matka.

Ohrid is a city that can be visited in 1 full day. Already taking a tour in the old city area, discovering houses similar to Safranbolu houses in our side streets and visiting the famous churches of Ohrid will fill your program.. According to the information in Evliya Çelebi’s Travel Book, there were 365 churches in Ohrid.. So officially there is a church for every day of the year!
By the way, keep in mind The pearl of Ohrid is famous. You know, if you intend to buy a gift, you cannot find a better gift than this in these lands.
Another subject you cannot believe in Ohrid is how can a lake be so clean? You can swim, canoe, fish or even drink this water in this see-through soda water.. The cleanliness of this famous lake comes from both aboveground and underground sources.
Speaking of the source, let’s talk about Sveti Naum.. Just 30 minutes from the center of Ohrid, Sveti Naum is unbelievably beautiful.. In this area, which is established in a lush national park, you can both see the water source feeding the Ohrid Lake and visit the Monastery within the facility.. Of course, the main activity that should not be returned without being done is to make a river tour with boats by paying 2.5 Euros per person.. You will be able to see the bubbles coming out of the ground with your own eyes on that raft ride.. We loved Niko, the owner of our boat.. He drove us around for half an hour, singing Macedonian songs and rowing his oars.. For Montenegro, the new country on our route, we were going to cross Albania with our car and reach Budva at night.
