Cascais, Portugal My Travel Notes

After a long Lisbon article, today I will talk about Cascais, a small and interesting Portuguese town located next to Lisbon.

I am planning my Cascais trip as part of my Portugal tour I want to remind you that I did. You can learn about the first days I set foot in Portugal from my Lisbon travel notes. Today our glorious roads are in Cascais !

Friday, 20 March 2015. I wake up in Lisbon. After the first two tiring days, it’s time to get out of Lisbon today. After breakfast, I already left my hostel and set out for Cascais.

Cascais Train Station

How to Get to Cascais?

First of all, I want to talk about how to get to Cascais.. Trains are the easiest way to get from Lisbon to Cascais. If you have read my Lisbon notes, the last stop of the trains going to the Belem Region I mentioned there is Cascais.

Transportation Between Cascais and Lisbon

Cascais trains are located in the south-west of the city Lisbon Cais do Sodré Train Station. Departures from. You only need to pay 2.5 euros for this trip.. You can buy the ticket from the machines at the station.. However, you should pay attention to keep your ticket with you until the end of the journey.. Because you have it read at the station you get off at.. Frankly, I had a bit of a headache about this !

One of Cascais’s Bay Beaches

Where is Cascais?

I get my ticket from the station and my train is moving towards Cascais. On this journey that will take approximately 1 hour, I have the chance to watch the entire coast from the Tejo River to the Atlantic Ocean with the naked eye.

Now I would like to briefly talk about Cascais to you. Cascais is a Portuguese city located on the Atlantic Ocean, just 30 kilometers west of the capital Lisbon.. Its population is about 200 thousand.

Cascais General View

You can think of this city as the Şile of Istanbul.. Cascais, which mostly hosts summer houses, beaches and a marina, also draws attention with its luxury hotels, yachts and golf clubs.. In addition, the “Boca do Inferno” on the Atlantic coast is a candidate to be a tourist attraction with the cliffs of the mouth of hell.

After a pleasant journey that lasts for an hour, I am in Cascais.. The train station is located at the entrance of the city. There is a small square right in front of it.. From here I start walking parallel to the beach.

Places to Visit in Cascais

I start exploring the must-see places in Cascais. First of all, the peaceful atmosphere of the city catches my eye. I told you that this is a holiday destination.. Valbom Street, which I continue to walk after the station, is the busiest place in the city.. Here you can find various restaurants and shops.

At the end of the street, I arrive at the 5th October Square, now I have reached the beach.. Here is a nice coastal walking track and next to it one of the small beaches of Cascais.

The Peaceful Streets of the City

Can you swim in Castais?

There are many beaches of various sizes in the form of such small coves. Parallel to the train station, you can explore these places on the beach and swim in this beautiful sea in summer.

There are summer houses along the coastline and beautiful buildings with castle-like architecture.. After taking pictures here. I find myself on the beach regardless of the weather.

Me on the Atlantic Beaches / Cascais

Since it’s around 20 degrees, I just stick my feet in. These waters have a special meaning for me.. This is the Atlantic Coast !

Although the beach is out of season, it is quite colorful. A sand artist has built a beautiful sand castle representing Cascais on its edge. It suddenly brought back memories of my childhood.

Cascais Beach and Sand Castle

I keep walking further west along the beach. Here is the city’s marina and sailing club.. As someone who sailed professionally in my childhood, it really draws my attention.. The view of the sailing boats on the Atlantic waters is wonderful.

I arrive about 2 kilometers west of the city centre.. Here is the most important place of the city, Boca do Inferno.

Cascais Marina and Sailboats

Europe’s Westernmost Point

You are now integrating with the Atlantic Ocean, together with the Hell’s Mouth Cliffs. For thousands of years waves crashing on these beaches the rocks took on a very different look.. There are some nice spots to take pictures here.

Also, I’m literally in the westernmost part of Europe now.. Even though Roka Cape, which is about 10 kilometers away, is officially the westernmost point of the continent, I have no way of going there, so I’m content with it.. You will not encounter a different view anyway.

The Coastal Road to Boca do Inferno

Unfortunately, it is not possible to reach Cape Roka without your own vehicle.. However, Hellmouth Cliffs offers a close simulation of that place. It’s exciting to know that America is now where the horizon ends!

This time I’m heading towards the center from the inner part of the city.. Here, away from the noise of the city, there are decent streets and nice tiled buildings to explore.

Boca do Inferno

Cobbled roads, street lamps and tiled apartment numbers are the striking details.. There are also local wine bars and restaurants on the streets.

I’m reaching the city center. In order to capture the atmosphere of the city I improvise in the side streets. Since Cascais is not a very big place, the few places I will visit are finished.

The Atlantic Coast Cliffs and I

For the return, I head to the Cascais Train Station and my Cascais trip ends here.

To summarize, Cascais is one of the must-see places in Portugal with its beaches and calm air. You can spare half a day on your Lisbon trip here, this time will be more than enough.

Cities Around Cascais

I am continuing my trip to Portugal. Tonight my route is back to Lisbon and tomorrow I will continue to Porto, another important city in Portugal.

For those who have not read can take a look at my Lisbon itineraries. I’ll be completing my Porto article soon. That’s all for today from this beautiful town, stay with love!
