Heybeliada Terk-i Dünya Monastery (Abandoned World Church)

The events on Heybeliada, which has a very old history, are just as many.. While there are a considerable number of historical buildings in the island, there are also many legends told by the inhabitants of the island.. I will tell you about a place of worship that has left itself in the arms of loneliness in this intense history: Terk-i Dunya Monastery

The monastery whose real name is Hagios Spyridon is named as Terk-i Dünya in Turkish.. Located on the opposite side of the island’s settlement, the monastery, built on the hill to the right of Çam Limani Bay, has a very impressive view.. The first foundations of the church were laid by a young monk in 1862. The building, which was built in a very small way, collapsed in the 1894 earthquake. With the contribution of the island’s residents, a larger monastery opens for worship. Located in a very remote and quiet corner of the island, the monastery is open for worship only between June and September.. Apart from that, the family that guards the building continues its life here.. They try to make a living by offering something to the visitors.

Transportation to the monastery is provided by the dirt road between the pine trees on the asphalt road.. When you walk on this road, you will be greeted by the rectangular monastery surrounded by anchors on a high shore and planted with vegetables in its garden.. Çam Harbor and Büyükada on your left, Yassıada on your right… Apart from that, you are faced with a vast blue sea view.. Church garden with a peaceful environment where you can really sit and enjoy the view for hours. For this reason, it has long been one of the places preferred by monks to get away from the worldly life.. I guess there is no better place to retreat than this.

If you want to have a quiet day, you should come here, especially during the week (it will be crowded on Thursdays because worship is held).. Here, while witnessing the peaceful environment of nature and the magnificent sea view, the echoes of the sad stories of the centuries-old experiences on the island are whispered to the ears.
