Krakow Old Town and Wavel Palace

While visiting the old city, there is a very old church built in 1098 on the palace road.. Watch out for the stairs here.. Too narrow and steps too high. Those with calcification can skip it.

And Wavel palace… It overlooks the city a little more, but not far from the old city, within easy walking distance from the main square if desired.. It is not such a luxurious or ostentatious palace, it is very simply decorated.. In other words, he does not shout “I am the palace, I am the palace” with an outside eye.. Gothic, baroque and romanesque architectural features. The cathedral inside is still considered the Poland’s National shrine. 3,000 people lived here at the same time. The coronation ceremonies of all kings are held here.. 3. The tomb of Casimir is also located here.

The importance of this palace was of course greater during the period when Krakow was the capital of Poland (1100-1700).. On the side of the palace that faces the Vistula river, one can go down to a cave with stairs.

This place is called “Dragon Cave“. Legend has it that during the reign of King Krakus, a dragon lived in the cave under the palace, and this dragon was constantly damaging the city.. He was killing people and animals.. The people asked him to leave them alone if they brought a girl to the front of the cave every month and presented it to the dragon.. The Flirtatious Dragon agreed, too.. Come and go, a girl from every family was sacrificed in Krakow.. The only girl left to be sacrificed was the King’s daughter.. The king would not say to the dragon, “Here, this is my daughter”, but he told the one who killed the dragon that he could marry his daughter.. Hearing this award, many men, young and old, died trying to kill the dragon.. But a shoemaker named Dratewka gave the dragon a sheepskin stuffed with sulphur.. The dragon ate it, but the sulfur made the dragon thirsty. The dragon drank almost the entire Vistula.. He would not have been able to withstand the water so much that it exploded in the middle of the city.. Princess and Dratewka lived happily ever after. The exploding lecherous Dragon has become one of the symbols of Krakow.. A statue of him has also been erected here…”Wavel Dragon
