Lebanon. How many times in my life “There used to be known as the Paris of the East.” I went to Beirut, the city where I heard the phrase, on a hot weekend in May, after researching history, culture, politics, economy and food, which I have done curiously on dozens of blogs.. Before I go to a place, I collect as much information about the city and country as I can, I take care not to miss even the smallest detail.. Here in this article, I want to tell you everything I know about both Beirut and Lebanon
1. Getting Started in Beirut, Lebanon
I know I will be very upset if I come back and realize I missed something. Maybe, after 50 countries, I now know better what I should do, in short, what I want.. Whereas what do people learn as they travel…
I had thousands of questions in my mind while I was on the plane.. While trying to observe the dozens of Lebanese citizens who will be flying with us, I was also browsing my notes.
As you know, until the 90s, I was going to a city where pain and screams reigned, and where they were brutally shooting each other in the middle of the street, brother and sister killed without blinking an eye.
What I have seen pain in this city, nor sorrow. I’ve been a prisoner of my prejudices in vain. As always, I realized that people have more control over everything after traveling and seeing, not by reading.
Beirut is not that old Beirut anymore.. A lot of water has passed under the bridge. Although not as much as its former glory, this is already a city halfway through.
Beirut taught me that it is not by reading in such places, but by coming, seeing, breathing in its streets, and living the life of its people. It was necessary to explore the world by shaking his hand, looking into his eyes, living like them, getting rid of your prejudices.. Now I understand once again that what’s the use of hearing it after not seeing it…
2. About Beirut-Lebanon & Where is Beirut Lebanon?
As our Istanbul is more popular than Turkey, the same is true for Beirut.. The capital, Beirut, is a better known name than the country’s name, Lebanon, and more familiar to the world.
While the country’s population is just over 4 million, Beirut has a population of over 1.5 million.. Although the official language is Arabic, English and French are as widely used as the official language.. Meanwhile, there are said to be more than 20 million Lebanese living abroad.
You will see Lebanese speaking the 3 languages I mentioned above on the streets.. For those who ask where is Beirut: The location of the country is as you guessed, the region of disasters, suffering and troubles.. Israel in the south, Syria in the east…
Normally, I don’t give much information about the history of the countries.. I say “Get the link here”. But I would like to give some detailed information about this country.
The country, which declared its independence after 1943, was the cultural, artistic and economic center of the region until the 1970s. He lived through the war period when Christians and Muslims killed each other and Christians and Muslims killed each other.
The main reason for the outbreak of war Reason; Communities belonging to 2 religions clashed with the fact that the leading Christians in terms of population and the Muslims coming from Palestine increased this rate and claimed rights day by day.. In Lebanon, which was turned into a ruined city as a result of the conflicts, Prime Minister Rafic Hariri worked hard for the country to rise again.. Of course, the period of re-emergence continued after that, and now the rising skyscrapers, the latest model cars, incredibly well-groomed women, and luxury stores have awakened the country again.
I would like to talk about a very important artist.. One day, I heard that voice while my Egyptian friends, whom I love very much, were taking us around the streets of Cairo.. I said “Who is this woman”. My friend said, “Isn’t it beautiful?. Man loses himself. He dreams.
That woman is Lebanese artist Fairouz. She is the woman Lebanon, and even the entire Arab world, finds herself listening to.” he said. Actually, that’s when my curiosity about Lebanon started.
I just wanted to follow this voice.. it affected me a lot. I would especially recommend you to listen to the song “Li Beirut” alone in a quiet environment at night.. Let’s see what effect it will have on you…
3. Beirut-Lebanon travel guide
Lebanon is quite a small country in our opinion, as its area is just over 10,000 km².. Currencies are Lebanese Pounds and 1 dollar is approximately 1500 Lebanese Pounds.
However, dollars are widely used everywhere and almost all accounts can even be paid in dollars.
Just like that, “Oh, how worthless their money is.” Do not be fooled by such a mistake. Generally, we as a nation fall for it.
Personally, I used to bleed.. But we got slapped so much that I can’t pass without telling in this country. That’s why I will try to explain everything in TL, Dollar and Lebanese Lira.
Lebanon is my 50. was my country. In each country I go to, I make an estimated budget because I do extensive research before I go.. I’ve never been wrong before. Except Beirut…
1 pizza, 2 lemonades approx 34,500 Lebanese Lira. In other words, it is around 60 TL in TL.. 1 bottle of water is around 1500 Lebanese Pounds. So 2.7 TL. 1 hookah, 5 beers 1 water approx. 58,500 Lebanese Lira. So more than 100 TL. By the way, the restaurants and cafes I’m talking about are also in ordinary places.
Who knows how much money we would have spent if we sat by the marina.. I will explain the details further below.. Because this city literally shocked me in terms of wealth. The place where he is in such poverty must be very cheap! I was wrong, my friends…
Foreign language learning is compulsory from kindergarten in the country.. As I said above; Although the country has a population of more than 4 million, they claim that the number of Lebanese immigrating abroad is more than 20 million.
So we learned that the owners of hundreds of skyscrapers rising in the newly built Solidere district, Lebanese working abroad with good salaries, invest in Beirut or ensure their families living in the country live in luxury.. I’m not surprised…
As a phone line, take the Touch company line from the city center. Average 6,000 Lebanese Liras.
After seeing how many Porsches, Ferraris, Range Rovers, Mercedes, BMWs I saw during the day, Chanel, Gucci, Burberry stores lined up like markets on the corners of the stores, how much about Beirut? I realized that I was very wrong. However, it is worth mentioning that. Like everywhere else, rich very rich poor very poor…
4. Getting to Lebanon
How to get to Beirut ? Are flight tickets to Beirut expensive ? Pegasus Airlines offers flights to Rafic Hariri International Airport in the capital Beirut directly from Turkey at very affordable prices on the Istanbul Beirut route.. You can check the air ticket prices at this link.
You can fill in the entry-exit cards while entering and leaving the country and visit them without a visa.. If you book early to get cheap flight tickets, you can provide round-trip transportation for 350-400 TL.
I explained how I found cheap flights abroad and which search engines I used in my “Best Flight Ticket Search Engines” article one by one.. I would definitely recommend you to read it
Taxi is your only option for transportation to and from the city center.. You can get around 40,000 Lebanese Liras from the airport to the center and 5,000 Lebanese Liras for transportation within the city.
Although there are normal taxis, you will see pirate taxis everywhere.. But my suggestion is to use the Uber app.. Download the app and travel around Beirut comfortably. This would be the easiest way. By the way, 1 liter of gasoline in Lebanon is around 25,000 Lebanese liras.
An information about pirate taxis: Refugees, especially those who migrated from Syria, use these taxis and they can take them cheaper than Lebanese taxi drivers.. But make sure to bargain anyway.. Whatever they say, usually say half. very coyotes. I will explain in more detail in the places to visit section below.
Also, you should rent a daily car for transportation to historical places outside the city.. You can rent a car by yourself, but I say don’t suffer the disgraceful Lebanese traffic.. Your vacation can suddenly turn into a grind and you can become a disgrace.. I will explain the prices and routes in the places to visit section.
5. Food and Drink in Lebanon
Where and what to eat in Beirut ? I don’t give easy restaurant names. But for some reason, before I came to this city, I focused on food so much, I read praising articles that I did not want to skip the suggestions at this point.
So let me give some detailed information about both restaurants and food.. And I guess, as we grow up, people’s habits also change.
Four years ago, one hamburger was enough, but now I’ve been searching for the best restaurant in the city.. we are growing. Or our habits are changing…
I’m not that much of a food lover. I’m more in love with sight than food. But while I’ve come this far, I have some important suggestions for you.. Lebanese tastes are very close to ours.. Starters such as Hummus, Tabbule, and Fattoush are very popular.
Grill type dishes are the main course.. Their local drink, Almaza beer, is quite nice.. They also have raki they call Arak.. It tastes a lot like our raki, but much lighter.. easier to drink. But after 2 glasses it hits bad. Let me tell you…
Even the menus at KFC are 14.000 Lebanese Liras. So almost $10
Also the guys are hookah lovers. Is hookah smoking everywhere? I swear they are drinking. Smoking a hookah while eating is commonplace for them.. Smoking is allowed in all venues.. Restaurants are always packed. They love to go out and have fun.
As for Beirut Restaurant suggestions; I want to write by region.. Thus, you can easily reach the address according to the region you are going to.
Le Chef Restaurant in Gammayzeh is very popular. Make a reservation before you go. We didn’t want to wait because it was crowded when we went.. But if you happen to be in this area, you should definitely stop by.
Le Gray Hotel’s İndogo On The Roof Restaurant was also very nice, but this is a very expensive restaurant.. For example, starters are around 20.000-30.000 Lebanese Liras, steaks are around 60.000 Lebanese Liras.. It is known as one of the best restaurants in the city.
A coffee at Starbucks is 8.5000 Lebanese Liras
It is a nice restaurant especially if you want to come as a couple and taste other cuisines.. Even the sushi menu at the rooftop bar is very nice.. California Rolls are around 12,000 Lebanese Liras, Sashimis are around 18,000 Lebanese Liras, and nigiris are around 15,000 Lebanese Liras.. You can check the hotel at here.
Abdel Wahab restaurant, which is close to Archief (Eşrefiye) street, is very nice.. This restaurant is one of the best in the city.. It’s an expensive place in terms of prices.
Mixed kebab is 25,000 Lebanese Liras, grills are 19,000 Lebanese Liras, arak is 9,500 Lebanese Liras, desserts is 8,500 Lebanese Liras and starters are 7,500 Lebanese Liras. You can see the traces of Arab culture in the architecture of the restaurant.. Always drink mint lemonade. 7,500 Lebanese Lira.
If in the Al Hamra District, Cafe Hamra is very beautiful. Here you can both eat and smoke hookah.. The garden is quite airy. If you will be staying on the Hamra side, it is perfect to come in the evening and relieve the tiredness of the day in the garden.. Grills cost 13,000-20,000 Lebanese Liras, doner kebabs are 6,000 Lebanese Liras, and hummus is 7,000 Lebanese Liras.
Kahwet Leila was also very nice.. This is a very expensive restaurant.. Kebabs are around 20,000 Lebanese Liras, chicken is around 22,000 Lebanese Liras.
There was a restaurant called The met in Beirut Souks. Here they were making sushi on the conveyor. In other words, on a rotating belt, sushi passes in front of you and you can eat any sushi you want.. I didn’t eat because I was full. But I wanted to suggest you. They were very praised.
Mr. Rock cafe is a very nice cafe, located in front of Pigeon Rocks (The Famous Pigeon Rocks), especially to watch the sunset and have a drink.
One of the most beautiful places where you can sit on the edge of the cliff and experience the disappearance of the sun over the Mediterranean and the taste of a drink on a cool evening with a magnificent Mediterranean view.
If Byblos If you participate in a tour including. However, it is expensive.
In short, these were the restaurants that caught my attention.. All in different regions. I wanted to help roughly by giving an example.. Consider that there are thousands of other restaurants and cafes as well.
Easier to set up food chores once you’ve figured out the route. I suggest you take a look at other restaurants on tripadvisor according to your tastes.
6. Accommodation in Beirut
Where to stay in Beirut ? I should have realized how expensive the city was before I went. To understand how expensive a city is, first look at the hotel prices.
Normally, I always look at the prices and make a budget accordingly, but Beirut gave me a wrong turn when it comes to budgeting.. It is in hotels. Go knowing you’ll pay at least $25-35 per person per day.
<
I explained how I stayed abroad economically, how I rented hotels-hostels and houses cheaply, in my “Economic hotel search engines” article, line by line.. I would definitely recommend you to take a look.
So since it’s 3.7 dollars when we go, set aside about 100 TL per day.. Ok, 100 TL is not such a big money, but I evaluate a city in terms of its own country.
That’s why I always say it surprised me.. One waits for a cheaper destination when going to a Middle Eastern country that one thinks is just recovering.
<
The prices of these 3-4 star hotels all together. Normally, the numbers you will pay can be around 250-300 TL.. The budget is up to you. You can see the list of great hotels in Beirut at this link.
My Suggestions for Beirut Accommodation Areas :
All the regions I will describe now are located in the heart of Beirut.. Please click on the links of all the alternative hotels that I offer you about accommodation and examine the hotels.. Prices are for 2 people per night.. You can choose whatever you want according to your budget.
Downtown District : As for the suggestions as a place to stay; For me, the heart of the city is Downtown, the new city district Solidere. If you stay here, you will stay in the area where shopping, nightlife, marina, in short, the most pleasant places.
If I go again, I would definitely stay here.. Especially if you are coming as a couple, definitely stay in this area.. It is beneficial to stay in the area close to the sea.
- Ramada hotel is located right in the heart of the city. Nightly price is 452 TL.
- Markazi Suites is also a nice hotel with an 8.2 rating. Price per night is 422 TL
- I personally visited Le Gray Beirut but did not stay. It was beautiful. 1.000 TL per night
Hamra District : There is also Hamra district. This is an area where mostly students hang out.. It is also a little more affordable in terms of price.
At the same time, this Hamra area can be considered more like Eminönü district of the city. If you’re coming as a traveler, stay in this area.
- The Mayflower Hotel is located right in the heart of the city. Price per night is 452 TL.
- Bliss 3000 Furnished Studios is a nice hotel with 8 awards. Price per night is 200 TL
- Studio 35my 2. It was the hotel I stayed in when I went. The rooms were very large. The nightly price was 232 TL.
- Caramel Boutique Hotel was also one of the hotels I stayed in.. It was 244 TL per night and it was a very nice business right in the heart of Hamra.
Rouche Area : Birde Rouche There is the (Rawchech) District. Here you will see dozens of skyscrapers rising.. You can witness a beautiful view of the famous Pigeon Rocks, especially if you stay in a room with a Mediterranean view, in the area very close to the beach area.
- ELite Hotel Spa price is 260 TL per night.
- King’s Suite Hotel received 8 out of 10. It has a nice location to watch the sunset. Nightly price is 275 TL.
- Dolphin Royal Suites A legendary hotel with a 9.5 rating and nightly accommodation cost is 384 TL.
Only these luxury areas will cost you at least $100 per day for 2 people. Do not stay anywhere but these 3 regions. Other regions are either bad or remote. In my opinion, these 3 regions were the most suitable.. Already in the places to visit, I will specify some points.

7. Entertainment-Shopping-Nightlife in Beirut
Entertainment-Shopping
For some, fun is chatting with people on the streets, while for others it is shopping by going from store to store.. Even though I’ve been a lifelong lover of shopping, let me tell you where to do, what to buy, what to see.
It’s a matter of character.. I realized that watching people pass by makes me happier than going to the shops to buy something in the store.. I couldn’t love it…
Shopping in the city There are 3 regions that are important for. But I think it’s enough if you see the 2 most important places.. The first one is ABC shopping mall.
This is one of the most important shopping malls in the city, located on Archrafieh (Eşrefiye) street.. There are many stores and the prices are almost the same as in Turkey.
The other one, I think is the best, Beirut Souks. Souk means bazaar. This is the city’s newly built Downtown or Solidere district.. A place equal to our Nişantaşı. The best quality venues in the city are here.
Even if you don’t buy anything, you can observe the lifestyle of the Lebanese people by walking around this fully open bazaar and having a cold drink.. While you’re here, you can walk to Zaitunay Bay, the Marina district.
The last region is the Hamra region, which is in our Eminönü logic.. Here you can see hundreds of shops selling all kinds of products you can think of.
But I personally did not like this area very much.. There are some areas, it’s not beautiful, but it’s historical.. While walking on its streets, you walk with love and enthusiasm, wondering about the next street or street.
I didn’t feel this feeling while I was walking around Hamra.. The Downtown area impressed me much more.. Because, despite the new construction, the buildings are arranged so neatly and in harmony that people can walk around peacefully and excitedly.
So my advice to you is, especially around Beirut Souks.
If you want to check whether there is an event in the city during your visit, they have prepared a very nice site.. You can see any event in the city, on that day.. Click for website.
Beirut Nightlife
Google’ When I type “Beirut nightlife”, when I see pictures that I did not expect, crazy, and nothing less than nightlife in most developed countries, “It is probably an advertisement.” I said. I was wrong…
They are officially in love with nightlife. everybody on the street. You can also see the richness I mentioned earlier in nightlife.
When half of the country is Christian, and when you think about the tourists and the fact that more than 20 million Lebanese living abroad come to visit the city all the time, why? I realized that the regions with so much nightlife are so crowded.
I thought everyone was calm, just like they’re smoking a hookah. When one goes to the Middle East region, at least one thinks it will be.. It turned out that it was a city where alcohol was consumed like water, no different from other modern cities, no one interfered with anyone else, and people had fun freely in their own way.
There is a lot of nightlife in Beirut. there is a region. I went to most. Let me tell you all about them, but I will describe the main ones.. I will give the others for information purposes.. I don’t want you to get tired for nothing.. Because I’m so tired.
<p style="text-align: justify;"You can start having fun in the bars in the strongSolidere area/strong. There is Uruguay street in this area. You will see a lot of bars in this street. You can have a few drinks here before the night starts.. But places are closed in winter. Only places open in summer or spring./pp id="caption-attachment-18222" class="wp-caption-text"One of Beirut's Most Beautiful Nightclubs/pp style=" text-align: justify;"You can sit at a table and watch the amazing caring Lebanese people pass by.. You can watch the Lebanese people walking down the street with rich men with very beautiful women and the opposite handsomeness, like watching a fashion show./ppstrongFor nightlife in Beirut/strong : strongO1ne/strong the club is a very, very nice nightclub. But this is one of the most elite nightclubs in the city.. Admission is free but they don't take everyone.. For your information. Cocktails are around 15,000-20,000 Lebanese Liras.. Personally, I love this place./pp style="text-align: justify;"Afterwards, you should go to B018, one of the best clubs in the city, which starts to fill up around 3 am and the entrance is around 22,500 Lebanese Liras.. This is an underground nightclub.. But remember, this is a pretty salty place too.. For example, a bottle of vodka is around $150, and a bottle of beer is around $8./pp id="caption-attachment-2041" class="wp-caption-text"B018 Club/pp style ="text-align: justify;"As for other areas, there are many pub-like places in strongHamra/strong. But I think it's unnecessary. Especially after the pubs in Solidere, this place won't cut you off./pp style="text-align: justify;"If you don't have a problem with money, it's around $100 per person per night, provided you make a reservation at the Music Hall or Sky Bar. you can go to. These 2 clubs are the elite of the city, we call it rich, it's where the community hangs out. However, Sky bar is open especially in summer./pp style="text-align: justify;"While different DJs are performing at Music Hall, Sky Bar is not only in Beirut but also in Europe. 13. So how much will this Lebanon trip cost?
I have roughly subtracted the approximate average possible costs. It can deviate 3 or 5 times from the amounts I have specified.. The rest is up to you.
- Transportation- Airplanes are usually between 300-500 TL. Of course, if you go during peak season, it may increase.. In the city, taxis can take you for short distances for around 3000-5000 Lebanese Lira.. But transportation from the airport to the city center will cost you 15,000 Lebanese Liras.
Also, if you want to take daily package tours, it will cost you 100 dollars.. But this price is for 2 people. The more crowded you are, the lower your cost. I also write different currencies like this.
Because deals are always in different currencies.. In these days when the E dollar is playing an incredible amount, I can’t predict whether it will be more expensive or cheaper in TL terms as you go.
If you are wondering how to find cheap flight tickets to Beirut, The best plane and train ticket sites see my post.
- Food- Restaurants are expensive. For food, you can set aside 15,000-25,000 Lebanese lira per meal. So this is around 10-18 dollars.. As I said before, this country is expensive.. Even 1 hot dog and 1 ayran is 6000 Lebanese Lira. That is $4.
Very expensive in most of the restaurants I mentioned above. Both alcohol and food prices are the most burdensome part in terms of cost.. That’s why I think you should spend an average of 30-40 dollars a day.. $40 means 60,000 Lebanese Pounds. This figure includes food-hookah-alcohol.
Of course, six or more is up to you.. No. >
- Accommodation- We stayed in a 4-star hotel for 2 people for $70 per day. So it was $35 per person. There was a cheaper one, but it was $25 per person.
But they were pretty bad. Therefore, your accommodation costs will vary between 35-60 dollars per person.. The choice is yours. I have already mentioned the places to stay in the accommodation section above.
I explained how I stayed abroad economically, rented hotels-hostels and houses cheaply, in my “Economic hotel search engines” article, line by line.. I definitely recommend you to take a look.
- Entertainment- As I mentioned, the tours are around 100 dollars. 50 Dollars. If you are going out and having fun at night, beer is 6000-8000 Lebanese lira, cocktail prices are 17,000-20,000 Lebanese lira. I mean, it’s not cheap at all.
- Shopping-The malls I mentioned for shopping are enough.. But I did not see any difference from Turkey. So the choice is up to you.
But on average, your daily cost will be around $80-100. If you are going to join the tours, you should set aside $150. It may cost less.
For example, if you give $30 to the hotel. If you spend $10 per meal, if you’re not too fond of nightlife and don’t spend money on alcohol, it can cost you $60.
14. When to go to Lebanon?
In the country where more than 200,000 souls have gone, the weather is the Mediterranean weather you know. Quite nice. But because we know that it is scorching hot in the summer, we went in the spring, in May.
p style=”text-align: justify;”>But I think autumn or spring are the best seasons to go. Since I like a little cooler seasons, I think these periods are more appropriate.
They said that there is a scorching heat in the summer heat.. I guess the scorching Lebanese air in the heat of August is unbearable.
15. What are the things I haven’t done in Lebanon but can suggest you ?
- I mentioned the route a few times above. That route is enough for you.. But if you have more time; I recommend you to see other cities both in the north and south.
- I walked but did not run on the Corniche (Coast) band. I would like to get up early in the morning and run on the beach and have a nice breakfast afterwards.
- I did not shop.. As usual… You do it.
- I couldn’t go to all the nightclubs I mentioned. ‘Cause I’m out of time and physical strength. Sometimes you have to make your choice. Night or day?
- If you have time to come this far, go to Jordan as well.. Especially do not return without seeing Petra.. You can read the details in my Jordan Travel Guide article.
16. My warnings about traveling to Lebanon
- Although it recovered after the civil war, it is still not a very developed country. That’s why it’s good to be careful.
- It is useful to pay attention to the neighborhoods where you can’t see the end, and the places under Hezbollah control in the areas you will go while you are touring Baalbeck.
- Don’t have cheap expectations. When we went, the dollar was 3.7 TL.. Maybe that’s why it seemed so expensive to us.. But still, where a bottle of water is $1 is expensive for me.
- They may ask you before meals if you want to smoke a hookah.. don’t be surprised. It’s pretty common for them.. They smoke hookah first, and eat their food at the same time.
- There will be entrance cards that you will fill in at the entrance of the country.. Therefore, it is useful to have your hotel and flight reservations with you, just in case.
- Remember.. Although the country is in the Middle East, this is not a purely Muslim country. Therefore, do not say “Selamunaleykum” as much as possible when entering a place.. The person in front of you may not be a Muslim.
- Always bargain. Book your tours as soon as you go.
- Make sure to make a reservation if you are going to nightclubs.
In short, Beirut my trip was quite fun, cultural and peaceful. It’s nice to get away and breathe on weekends like this once in a while.. It was a little expensive. Even more than I expected. But let it be. Any way is permissible for travel.
You can review the hotels on the Booking.com link about the hotel
Was gone, could have stayed longer. But now that I’m used to wandering the streets like crazy and returning to Istanbul, tired and unconscious, I am able to travel to the fullest even in what seems like a very short time, thanks to the routes I have taken. I hope that all the information I have mentioned and the routes I have drawn will work for you.
