London, the capital of England and one of the most popular cities in Europe, is always full of tourists.. In this article, which I hope will help those planning a London trip by gathering information about London, where I lived for a short time and which I have visited many times, I hope that this article will help those planning a trip to London about United Kingdom, England and London. I prepared a London travel guide with details such as information, life in London, London weather and England visa.
WHERE TO STAY IN LONDON for my list of places to see and places to visit in LONDON for my hotel recommendations and what to consider when choosing a hotel? you can read my post.
London, as you guessed, is the capital of England. England, on the other hand, is the largest of the four countries that make up the union called the United Kingdom (Other three: Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland). For this reason, London is also considered the capital of the United Kingdom.
More than 80% of the UK population lives in the UK. The population of England is 55 million and the capital city of London is around 8 million.
England’s form of government is parliamentary democracy. If you ask what it is, there are the queen and the royal family, who continue to exist symbolically as the head of state, even though the decisions are taken by the government led by the prime minister.
I wish your English was very good. Even with strong British accent you may have a hard time understanding people, don’t get discouraged. Basic rule; the letter a stays as a, it is not pronounced as e as we are used to. Example; The word “can” used to mean “to be able to” is pronounced as “kan”, not “ken”.. There are many people who admire the British accent, it’s a matter of taste.
England time is 2 hours behind Turkey (according to winter time application). The name of the river, which can be seen from many parts of the city, is River Thames. UK international dialing code is 0044.
England Visa
Britain is not included in the Schengen Agreement even though it is in the European Union. For this reason, you must obtain a United Kingdom visa to enter the UK, entry is not possible with a Schengen visa. The nice thing about the UK visa is that there are no surprises like the Schengen visa, “how much will it cost”, you decide how much you want and apply by paying the visa fee accordingly.. There are 6 month, 2 year, 5 year and 10 year versions.. If you are applying for the first time, you will be guaranteed a 6-month application, then you can switch to 2 years or 5 years if you wish.
The visa form is filled online on the website, an application is made and an appointment is made.. Then you have to go at the appointment time and hand over the documents. Visa fees ‘a bit’ expensive, the standard 6-month visa fee is 89 Pounds.
You can proceed by choosing step-by-step from here and you can apply for the visa accordingly. Do you need it and if so what type of visa should be. Find out first.
After you know what visa is needed, you can apply. Applications are made to Teleperformance. You can start by registering on the website and choosing the city you will apply to.. Here. They have offices in Mecidiyeköy Profilo AVM for Istanbul.
I have two applications before one week is over. I received the SMS “Your transaction is complete, your passport has been shipped” and I had no problems. (You can still apply 2-3 weeks in advance just in case, but even if you are too late to apply for reasons beyond your control, you can still have hope.)
United Kingdom You can use the visa to enter other UK countries and even Ireland under some conditions.. I mentioned it in my Dublin article, see: DUBLIN TRAVEL GUIDE
When to Go to London – How Long to Stay in London – London Weather
Considering that it is the second most visited capital in Europe after Paris, we can say that London has always been a very touristic city.. But if we have a choice, it would be logical to plan by considering the weather conditions.
You’ve heard more or less about the weather in England and most of what you heard is true The weather is usually cloudy and rainy, so the temperature averages are below 22 It may be a good choice to go in summer when the temperature is around. We are still cold even when the sun is out, but the British immediately switch to shorts and flip-flops.. Let them do so, do not be surprised by what you know; Even if you go in summer, don’t miss your cardigan and umbrella.
If you are going to London in winter, I recommend you to go from mid-November to New Year’s Eve, so you can see the New Year’s markets and entertainment areas ( You can have a great time visiting the Christmas Market, and you can love the fancy and glittering London prepared for the New Year.. The temperature will most likely be between 2 and 5 degrees, but you can warm up with drinks and dancing, Londoners do that
The direct flight from Istanbul to London takes around 4 hours. I think at least 4-5 days while you are gone, stay a week in ideal situation.. There is so much to see and do. I lived in London for two months and then went many times, yet there’s always something new to do each time I go.
Weird Things About England
Since England is a very powerful and advanced civilization, it seems like they made a separate effort to be different from the rest of the world when setting up all kinds of systems.. Unfortunately, you may have difficulty getting used to this situation when you go to London.
Most importantly, traffic. In the UK traffic is on the left. Looking to the right, then left, then right again and crossing is no longer valid here, you must do the opposite.. If you are confused, look at the ground before crossing, they usually try to indicate which side the traffic is coming from as Left or Right at pedestrian crossings.
The second important issue is sockets. Sockets in the UK are not two sockets as we know them.. It is necessary to use a tool called a converter (we can say a converter or a converter) to fit their sockets.. First of all, you can try to borrow it from your hotel or buy it from anywhere (They have officially created a revenue stream). If you can, buy it from Turkey, as everything will be more expensive there.
Another issue related to my London trip is the UK currency. This is England, of course(!) cannot use the Euro, which is the currency most other European countries use.. Currency is Pound (also called sterling, but pound is more commonly used) and our pennies are called Penny (100 Penny = 1 Pound). Unfortunately, the pound is a very strong currency compared to the TL, and if you calculate your expenses in London by converting them to TL, you may be disappointed.. Better go with pounds from Turkey, it can be difficult to find an exchange office that accepts TL when you arrive.. To find out the current rate, check here.
Units of measure are also weird. You might hear ounces or pints instead of liters, pounds instead of kilograms (currency is also the name of the unit of weight, you may be confused ) instead of kilometer you may hear miles, inches instead of meters.. Even the temperature is sometimes Fahrenheit (F) not Celsius (C) there. So, don’t be surprised if a Brit comes and says “It’s 68 degrees today”, he’s talking about the Fahrenheit unit and it’s actually 20 degrees as we know it
For those who are wondering, here are a few ratios; 1 inch =2.54 cm | 1 mile = 1.609 km | 1 pound = 454 gr
ACCOMMODATION – Where to Stay in London – London Hotels
Zone 1 is the most central area of the city, so you can guess that there are plenty of 5-star and super-luxury hotels here.. You can find relatively more affordable accommodation options in the first zone, both close to the outside (second zone) and very central thanks to the transportation network, and in the second zone itself.
This zone thing is a bit complicated, but since it affects the money you will pay for transportation and how efficiently you will use your time in the city, I did the necessary research for you as a person who knows the city In my article, my hotel recommendations such as what and where to stay on the subway map in general terms in WHERE TO STAY IN LONDON It will answer all your questions.
I don’t recommend staying further than the second zone, except when you have a very, very tight budget.. You will lose time on the road, you will pay more for transportation, and you will be more likely to see the poor life of immigrants instead of the beautiful and shining life of London.. This is the experience I had in my house in Zone 3 (it was in the east of the city – East London) where I stayed for two months, and I wish I could spare a little more budget and stay in Zone 2.

If you are going as a student, you can choose to stay with a homestay. But; Don’t fall into the illusion that “I will stay with a British family and improve my language with a British accent”, the family you are staying with will most likely be of Indian-Pakistani or African descent.
If you are going to stay in a hostel or a hostel, you will not be able to believe the small size of the room you stay in, if you want to keep a 3-4 star hotel and you have sacrificed a considerable amount of money.. The rooms are really incredibly small, I was surprised and annoyed every time. When you put your suitcase next to the bed and open it, you can’t lower the lid to the floor and it hits the wall, think like that But don’t get hung up on it, after all, you will come to the room to go to bed.
EXTRA INFORMATION
When speaking of England, you may have heard sometimes England, sometimes Britain, sometimes Great Britain, sometimes United Kingdom, and you may even think that they are the same thing and use them interchangeably.. There are differences, let’s talk.
England is a stand-alone country with London as the capital. Britain, England and Wales combined. When you say Great Britain, Scotland joins them.. When you say UK, someone else comes up, Northern Ireland. (Ireland not in the north is a separate country, it is nowhere in these troops. I wrote the details, see: DUBLIN TRAVEL GUIDE)
So; United Kingdom > Great Britain > Great Britain > We can narrow down the field we refer to as England.
So how is the UK flag? England’s own flag is a red cross on a white background.. The blue-red-white flag that you will see everywhere in London and that makes you think it is a British flag, is actually the flag of the United Kingdom and its name is Union Jack. Bold cross in the middle represents England (as in its own flag). The two diagonal lines represent Scotland and Northern Ireland.. Wales, the other member of the United Kingdom, is not included in this flag because it is governed by a principality.
There is also the issue of how to name people who are citizens of these countries, if you say British and pass them off, they can be corrupted. Northern Irish are all kinds of Irish, let’s put them aside. We can call the other three British in total.. Even if we want to divide it into smaller groups; It would be correct to classify it as English (British), Scottish (Scottish) and Welsh (Welsh).
