Republic of Uzupis: What Kind of Republic Is This in Central Lithuania?

Although we are neutral in the discussion of whether he travels a lot or reads a lot, we would like to add a point to the traveler side after our Vilnius trip with your permission.. Because if we didn’t try to go there, we probably wouldn’t have heard of the Uzupis Republic!

The Republic of Uzupis, known worldwide, is actually similar in concept to Christiania in Copenhagen or Metelkova in Ljulbjana. can be thought of as something. In summary, this is an independent settlement within Vilnius.. But of course, this independence is not officially accepted by the state, that is a separate issue.. We get into the details below, here you go.

Ps. We are very sorry for our title, which we refer to as a plain song, once one finds this title, one cannot stop making a joke……

Uzupis is actually the name of one of the oldest regions of Vilnius.. But in ancient times, this was a region that could be called the Red Light District of the time and was mostly inhabited by the poor. received. However, things started to change with the country’s independence in 91.. Because Lithuanian artists started to settle here gradually, taking advantage of the cheap rents in this region.

Today, Uzupis is an “unofficial” autonomous republic.. In other words, it is not officially recognized as independent by the Lithuanian State, but it has its own constitution, a small army of 11, a separate flag for each season, and even a president.. Moreover, the state is not against this formation at all, they even support it from time to time.. We are talking about a very peaceful community.

The Republic of Uzupis was founded on April 1, 1997 (yes, a significant date) and they do not neglect to celebrate their “independence” on April 1 every year.. Since there are still many artists and creative people living in the region, the celebrations are also quite enjoyable. You can enter and a huge sign greets you at the entrance.. But of course, you can go swaying, you don’t need to do anything special, as we said, it’s not an official autonomous republic.

The bronze angel statue that is believed to protect Uzupis. The square where it is located is the most central point of the region.. They named the statue the “Angel of Uzupis”, so it is known.. There are also several cafes and restaurants around.. If you happen to pass by here, you can spend time in this area.

Of course, another important point is Paupio Street. Because here, the most beautiful constitution we have seen in our lives is available in 10+ different languages, item by item.. Among them is Turkish.. We are not lazy and write down that constitution because we think everyone should read it.
