Rothenburg ob der Tauber – A “Hansel and Gretel” Town on the Romantic Road Route!

Rothenburg Travel Notes and Places to Visit in Rothenburg

Starting from Würzburg, in the Southernmost part of Germany, also known as Walt Disney Castle You may have heard of the ‘Romantic Road‘, which is the most famous ‘road trip’ road in Germany and even Europe, with a length of 350-400 km, which ends there at Neuschwanstein Castle!

There are dozens of medieval villages and towns along the way, and in places you feel in Heidi’s village, and in places you feel next to Hansel and Gretel in the towns of this road!

Here is Rothenburg the most untouched town of this 400-kilometer road, and the settlement in this area dates back to 500 BC.. even 13. century I. It was even deemed worthy of the title of the world’s first ‘free imperial city’ by Rudolph.

This tiny town is surrounded by walls, ditches and hills, and you understand why Rothenburg could never be crossed in its time.

So, we took a long look at the photos of this city (or town) last month (October 2017) and decided that we should visit it as soon as possible! A week later we were there with 7 of our friends!

Since we are 9 people in total, we spent 1 day and 1 night in the city, even if we traveled at a little ‘oxcart’ speed, and this time was enough for us to circumambulate the town.. In the meantime, we will talk about the strange things that happened to us later in the article!

We will give the ‘most realistic medieval city’ award to Rothenburg and start writing right away!
Rothenburg Travel Guide – The easiest way to get to the city Reachable?

Those who come to visit Rothenburg are divided into two; the first is for those who rent a car and road trip and the Romantic Road travels from beginning to end, and the second is for those who come to visit a city like Munich – Nuremberg in Bavaria, and Rothenburg Those who are also included in the trip.

If you are not going to come to the city by car, the easiest and cheapest way is to come by train.. If you are coming from Munich, Nuremberg or any other Bavarian city, it is best to buy a daily Bavaria Ticket. Namely; You buy the Bavarian train ticket, valid only in the Bavarian region, from the ticket machines in Munich or any other Bavarian city or from this site, valid on the day you go for sightseeing, and you can use it unlimitedly in all types of public transport within the borders of Bavaria all day (until 3 at night).

Ticket is 25 Euros per person and 6 Euros for each additional person (up to 5 people). Let’s say you are 5 people, you have unlimited public transportation right for a total of 49 Euros per day and you can get on almost all trains except the fastest ICE trains.. You can even go to Salzburg with this ticket.. Think with this logic, 5 people can leave Munich in the morning, go to Nuremberg, wander all day and go to Salzburg in the evening (okay, this was a very irrelevant route) and you pay 10 Euros per person for this.. In addition, for families with children, children under the age of 15 are free.

This is how cheap travel is done.. There is only one walking part left!

Since you will be traveling around the city with strength, you will not have any other ‘city transportation’ problems..

Accommodation in Rothenburg

Actually, places to visit in Rothenburg can be visited in 1 day and if you do not have a chance to stay for 1 night, you will not be upset. not necessary. But of course, if you have time and stay for 1 night, you will see the city in the evening and you can join the ‘Medieval Walk that takes place every evening in Rothenburg and starts at 20:00 (we will talk about this separately).

As for the hotel suggestion, we stayed at the ‘Rothenburger Hof’ hotel right across from Rothenburg Train Station and whatever you do, DO NOT STAY here! Of course, we have never seen a hateful, racist and extremely negative attitude before. If you haven’t met a German, you can go to this hotel and ask about the owners.. We do not call anyone racist easily, but the owner of the hotel, mother and son, were very racist, negative and negative people and we did not like their attitude towards us.. If something like this happens to you and you have made your reservation from Booking.com, make sure to complain and seek your rights.. Even though we could not get all our money back, we had 20 Euros refunded to our credit card.

The hotel we admired while passing by was ‘Burghotel Rothenburg‘. The price is 110 Euro per night.. If you want to gift yourself a nice night, you can research this hotel.

Which season is the most beautiful?

Because Rothenburg is a very touristic city, it can get very crowded in summer and There are approximately 537654 Asian tourists per metre.. We went in October and the weather/crowd ratio was pretty good.

If you can stand the cold weather, we think one of the best times would be the Christmas Markets set up between the end of November and the end of December.. Tiny Christmas tents and mulled wine, snacks and Christmas decorations will no doubt turn the city into a ‘visual feast’!

Places to Visit in Rothenburg
Markt Square

Of course, like every German city, this city has a ‘Markt Square’ and is a visual feast.. The square is surrounded by pastel-colored houses with pointed roofs from the 1600s.. The largest gothic building you will see in the square is the Rathaus, the Town Hall.. To find this square, you just have to follow the crowd of Asian tourists.

Not to forget, the shop windows in this square are extremely beautiful! Of course, everything is very expensive and we didn’t buy anything, but you just have to examine the shop windows.

Every day at 20:00 in the square, in front of the Town Hall, ‘Night Watchman’s Tour)‘ is held, and a ‘night watchman’ who comes with torches and an ax makes you take a 1-hour ‘medieval walk‘ through the torch-lit streets of the city.. The price per person is 7 Euros and 3.5 Euros for students.. If you want to review, we leave the link here. In our opinion, the best thing to do is to explore the city in your own way during the day and see this ‘medieval’ state of the city in the evening..

Another recommended walk while visiting the city is walking around the 2.5 km long walls surrounding the city.. Let’s repeat here what we have said in each of our articles, the most beautiful thing in Bavaria is its endless forests, and there are plenty of these landscapes and lots of greenery around Rothenburg!

Rathausturm

To get to the top of this tower, which was started to be built in the 14th century and completed in the Renaissance period, you climb approximately 220 steps and you look down on the Markt Square and all the orange roofs of the city! We already know that ‘a square and a tower’ are indispensable in European cities.

Deutsches Weihnachtmuseum (Christmas Museum)

If you love the New Year’s spirit, Christmas and wonder how Christmas has been celebrated for ages If you are, you will definitely love this museum.. Especially the Christmas Shop at the exit, the gifts and everything else is very nice. We are citizens of a snowman stabbing country (!), we loved this place too much. Of course, we didn’t buy anything because the store was very expensive, but our eyes saw it and that’s enough for us.

To be honest, Rothenburg is a city to visit by visiting the streets and enjoying the atmosphere, and there is no need to visit museums here.. Even if you have never visited a museum. But if you are traveling with children, you can visit Puppenmuseum) and Toy Museum (Spielzeugmuseum). Perfect for those who want to entertain their children while traveling.

Another museum you can visit if you are interested is the Kriminalmuseum. There were prison rooms, whips and torture devices, but we skipped that too.. If you are interested in such museums, you can check out the version in Toledo, Spain, it was the one that impressed us the most.

Food and Drink Chapter:

We need to make a note here.. If you want to have a nice German dinner, a reservation is a must in Rothenburg.. We have not pre-booked any place in any European city we have visited and we have never had any problems.. But in Rothenburg we had about 9-10 different options in the evening and we were quite surprised to look at them one by one and see that they were full! Well, brother, if you travel with 9 people, you will say that there is no place, but there was no room for even 2 people.. You can make a reservation by looking at and choosing the place you want to go on Tripadvisor.

There is also Schneeballen (snowball dessert)) which Japanese tourists eat with a lot of love to bears, which only 1 person from our team of 9 liked.. Anyway, it doesn’t hurt to try, after all.

We went to Brot & Zeit for breakfast and we loved it.. They have both great variety of sandwiches and very good coffee. Their prices are also very affordable.

Zur Holl – Mittelalterliche Trinkstube, Restaurant Michelangelo and Profumo Di Pasta Da Giuseppe would like to go if we wanted to go. It was one of the recommended restaurants that we could not go to.. ‘Restaurant Alter Keller‘ became a place where we ate our lunch and were satisfied.

We also had our dinner at Rothen-Burger We ate at the ‘burger’. Although we were satisfied with the hamburgers we tried, the belt broke for us after that!

At noon, in the middle of the above mentioned Markt Square, a Turkish Bride-Groom convoy was throwing their belly by pulling the convoy to the middle of the square and opening Demet Akalın, and they tried to leave traces on the stones of the square, which is hundreds of years old, because they ‘paw’ to release smoke. they did not neglect. When the owner/partner of the Rothen-Burger we went to in the evening was Turkish, and naturally he knew today’s bride-groom, he explained the location of the wedding hall, saying ‘you must stop by their wedding, the place is on the left just past the church’ and we will probably have forethought in a moment. we found ourselves at the place where the wedding was held… We don’t know why we went there either

We wish happiness to our young couple here. We wish you “pawless wedding convoys” with plenty of belly button.

It was a city we liked and loved very much, and we had a lot of fun and laughter in every way.

Our next article will be Bamberg, which we went after Rothenburg..

Loves!
