Before Scotland;

The unknown face of Scottish history

  • At the beginning of the 100s AD, a warrior and savage tribe named ‘Picts’ lived in the Highland region of Scotland.
  • Later, when the Roman Empire conquered many places and came to the Highlands of Scotland, the picts started to defend their own regions with all their might.
  • The Roman Empire, whose patience was strained by the Picts’ attacks, built a wall in the north of England in 138 and thus left these wild ‘Picts’ out.
  • Then the Romans settled in England in 410. When it was withdrawn from the city, this wall became meaningless and started to fall down over time

Therefore, Scotland and the Highlands region have survived to the present day.. As a tourist attraction, especially the rural areas of Scotland, it started after the movie Braveheart!

Let’s move on to Planning your trip to Scotland part;

Our Six-Day Itinerary to Scotland & Places to Visit in Scotland

Edinburgh

When Scotland is mentioned, Edinburgh cannot be overlooked.. In fact, you will probably start your trip from here because you flew to Edinburgh and you will fall in love with the city from day one! As for How many days to visit Edinburgh; In our opinion Edinburgh is a relatively small city and it will take no more than 1.5 days to visit the sights.

But; Much more than Edinburgh attractions and its main beauty is to add the energy of the city and have some fun. For example, when the streets become familiar and you go to your favorite pub a second time.. So if you have time, 3-5 days would be nice.. We stayed for 3.5 days and we could not get enough. We will definitely go again in the future.

Highlands

After

Edinburgh comes the Highlands region of Scotland. The mountainous area in the North and West of Scotland is referred to as the ‘Highlands’ region.. In other words, this is the country’s untouched, untouched nature, almost uninhabited.. And of course, there’s a huge Isle of Skye, famous for its haunted valleys and whiskey.

You should rent a car, spare at least three days to visit the Highlands region, no matter what season it is. We recommend that you take thick clothes and a raincoat, and spend a day on a Scotch whiskey tasting tour.. If you haven’t planned a separate trip to the Highlands, you can also book the whiskey tasting tour as a day trip from Edinburgh.

Also, as you know, in Scotland the steering wheel is on the right and the traffic flows on the right. What is important for us here is to have full insurance when renting the car by saying ‘just in case’.. This way, you will at least have peace of mind because you have insurance.

For accommodation in the Highlands region, you can choose hostel-like accommodation called ‘lodge’. We stayed in a small logde and in the evening it was invaluable to chat with other travelers in the common areas and listen to their experiences

The points we would suggest you add to your route during the Highlands tour; Loch Lomond, Glen Coe Valley, Fort William, Glenfinnan Viaduct, Eilean Donan Castle and Kyleakin. And of course Skye!

Scotland Whiskey Tour Experience

While we have come to Scotland, we must say that one of the most unique experiences to be gained here will be the whiskey tour.. Especially for the Scotch whiskey fan couple like us!

Scotland whiskey tours can be arranged as daily or 2-3 days. The main activity of the tours is to visit the distillery where whiskey is produced, and enjoy the views while doing so.. If you even go, sing a Scotch for us!

Scotland whiskey tasting tour starts and the tour starts to take you to the whiskey distillery, you will see that the regions where the distillery are located look like a postcard square! We must add the smell of whiskey in the air.

They welcome you at the distillery with whiskeys that are at least 12 years old.. We learn that an average distillery produces 10-15 liters of whiskey per minute, a Scotch whiskey must have an alcohol content of 40% and above, and mature in oak barrels for at least 3 years + 1 day.. In fact, the obligation to use oak barrels comes from the laws of Scotland.. We get different grain flavors and natural malt flavor in Scotch whiskey.. It is interesting, is not it!?

Scotch drinking raccon is like this, first we smell it, then we take a sip and put it in our mouth, wait for at least 3-4 seconds and drink it like that.

Considering all this, it comes as no surprise that Scottish whiskeys are the best quality whiskeys in the world.

After the tour, we sit back and enjoy the endless greenery.. We hope that our path will cross this beautiful country again!
