What Will Cars Be Like in the Future? (My Article in the Digitalage September Issue)

With technology companies such as Google taking an active role in the automobile world, people are much more curious about the cars of the future.. The cars of the future will be on the road with driverless cars, laser technologies, personalization and much more.

“A science fiction movie that I also starred in 6 years ago In I Robot, robots were everywhere. The sensors were detecting, interpreting and responding to your every reaction.. All cars could move without a driver. This movie was actually about the year 2035.. Was this a science fiction?” the famous American actor James Cromwell’ before inviting Audi World President Rupert Stadler to the stage.

Four years ago, Las Vegas’ Audi World President’s presentation at CES, the world’s largest consumer electronics fair, started with such an interesting anecdote.. Rupert Stadler was explaining that many of the things that were considered science fiction in that movie at the time are actually now doable.. The most important of these were self-driving cars.. In this presentation, Stadler showed us a video of an Audi driving down a winding mountain road.. At the end of the video, we were all surprised that there was no driver for the vehicle.. However, Rupert did not forget to make a refreshing statement for drivers like me who enjoy driving, “Our goal is not to take away your driving pleasure, but to provide a safer driving opportunity”.

Since then, the automobile world has gained significant momentum.. Especially with the entry of Google into the automobile industry, the popularity of smart cars around the world has increased even more.. In fact, almost all automakers are working on this issue.. When it comes to smart cars, the first thing that comes to mind is self-driving cars.. There are brands that have made significant progress in driverless cars up to a certain speed.. Bosch, the world’s largest automobile supplier industry, explained in a few meetings that I also attended, that with the technology they developed themselves, vehicles between 0-50 km can be driven without a driver, that is, especially in stop and go traffic, where the traffic is heavy.. However, it is more accurate to call it semi-autonomous rather than autonomous driving.

They Build and Test a Fake City Inside the University

There are serious studies on this in North America. A fake city was created at University of Michigan for self-driving car studies. Here, self-driving cars are tested and developed by creating a real city traffic environment.. Florida is one of the 4 states in the USA that makes the necessary legal arrangements for self-driving cars.. (Other states: Nevada, California, Michigan) Thus, Audi is testing its self-driving cars in this state.

About 5 years of driverless cars It is expected to be implemented in. Of course, there are more pessimistic predictions on this subject.. However, there are some obstacles in front of these cars.. One of them is legal obstacles.. Today, there is no legal infrastructure suitable for the use of self-driving cars in many countries.. When a driverless car crashes, who is the culprit, does the insurance company pay this fine, etc… It is necessary to find answers to the questions.

Another problem with cars with drivers is traditional cars.. Self-driving cars are indeed an ideal solution in an environment where all cars are talking to each other.. Because even if they are coming from blind spots, the risk of accident disappears as the cars talk to each other.. But the majority of conventional cars do not have these features.. Therefore, driver-related errors can also put self-driving cars at risk.. This is why testing has been done for so long in real traffic environments.. For example, Google has reached 700 thousand km accident-free journeys.

Who Will Be Guilty If A Driverless Car Accidents?

Although self-driving cars always come to mind when talking about the cars of the future, innovations in the automobile world are not limited to self-driving cars.. In-car entertainment systems are an area where automobile and technology companies work together intensively.. Google and Apple are in serious competition in this area as well.. The duo want to bring their platform into cars.

Car manufacturers have already started choosing their ranks one by one.. Others try to spread the risk by choosing both Google Auto and Apple Car. Thanks to these systems, your cars and mobile phones can talk.. You can download the applications you need to your cars, just like on your tablets and smartphones.. In Turkey, Turkcell introduced its Android-based automobile platform this year.. The company is collaborating with the Subaru and Volvo brands in Turkey on this subject. doing studies. Adapting intuitive technologies to cars. Mobii provides remote access to cars with smartphones, recognizes the driver with facial recognition systems and personalizes the driving experience.. For example, if Mobii can’t recognize the driver, it sends a photo to the owner’s smartphone to inform him of the situation.. In this way, the owner can make regulations regarding speed limit, safe driving rules, in-car sound level and mobile phone use for other drivers.

Traditional alcohol test instead of laser technology

Another expectation for the cars of the future is to manage the car with hand gestures.. Google already bought a tech company on manual control last year. Now, the company, which has received a patent on manual control in the car, is doing serious studies on this subject.. This requires special cameras and laser technologies.. These laser technologies can be seen much more frequently in the cars of the future. It can even replace traditional alcohol tests.. After the studies at the Military Technology University in Warsaw, today the amount of alcohol in the driver’s breath can be detected thanks to laser technology.

The materials used in their cars will also be different.. New fuel technologies and the scarcity of energy resources in the world push car manufacturers to use lighter materials.. We may see the lightweight carbon fiber materials used by BMW in its new electric “i” series in many more cars in the future.

Customizable Cars

When it comes to the cars of the future, Toyota cannot be mentioned without mentioning it.. The Japanese automaker also has important studies in this regard.. One of them is customizable cars.. Color is an important criterion when buying a car.. However, at the point reached today, doesn’t it still surprise most of us that the color of cars is not digital? In the company’s vision of the future car, there are car designs that turn into a customizable display. Toyota Fun Wii Concept A concept car introduced at the Toyota Motor Show in 2011. Of course, in order for this concept to come to life, the price of this touch screen technology must decrease.. Because it is not a problem to be produced, but the important thing is that it is produced at an affordable price.

Another issue Toyota is working on is turning the rear seat windows into interactive tablets.. The name of this project, in which the Copenhagen Interactive Design Institute and Toyota engineers work together, is “Window to the World”. You can find very interesting videos about this project on Youtube.. When you watch the video, you can better see how interesting the project is. As James Cromwell said, science fiction movies of the past are slowly becoming reality.. I think we’ll soon start visiting the cars we drive now in museums.
